The elegant Vulcan Building sits alongside Portsmouth’s waterfront and was restored in 2006 to create a new home for the gallery .The conversion of the heritage site won a prestigious RIBA award and expresses the best of contemporary architecture in the city.
Aspex is a fantastic environment in which to discover contemporary art, to learn, to think differently and most importantly break boundaries by trying something new. Workshops and events are hosted in the main gallery along with a fast changing intro exhibition space that ensures there is something new to see each time.
Aspex is not confined to the gallery, priding itself on bringing art into the community it has also developed an adventurous off-site program explore. The program creates opportunities for more constituencies of people to see experimental, contemporary art.
Explore recently ran an innovative exhibition in Portsmouth’s gardens entitled A LOT MENT. The one-day event saw gardeners, musicians, poets and curators explore the relationship between horticulture and visual culture. The exciting and unique program included a Scarecrow Making Family Workshop, Frog Morris’s 'Vegetable Poetry' and a performance from Artists band 'Chubby Nest' who played beneath the dappled shade of the trees.
The future promises to be nothing but brilliant as the gallery builds on previous successes with an extravaganza of stimulating exhibitions, projects and events.
