New Theatre Royal

Recently restored, the beautiful Victorian grade II star listed theatre is home to Portsmouth’s creative powerhouse at the heart of the city.

The New Theatre Royal prides itself on an original view of art and culture and is committed to present, promote and produce wonderful work for the people of Portsmouth that reflects the cultural and social diversity of the city.

Originally opened in 1884, designed by C.J Phipps and later re-designed by Frank Matcham, the same architect who designed Her Majesty's Theatre London, the grand auditorium hosts a varied programme including drama, music, theatre, musicals, dance and circus.

The New Theatre Royal presents work from a wide range of professional touring companies including some of the leading contemporary dance companies such as Motionhouse Dance Theatre, who have performed twice at the theatre, with powerful and moving displays of athleticism and acrobatics.

The internationally acclaimed Sonia Sabri Company performed Indian Kathak Dance in the theatre's 2005 programme. Pilot Theatre, who specialise in work for young people, returned to the New Theatre Royal after their rapturous performance of Lord in 2005 with another exciting production of Looking for JJ.
