Portsmouth Hospital

Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust is one of the largest acute hospital trusts in the country and the second largest employer in the area.

The first section of the new state of the art hospital on the Queen Alexandra Hospital site has opened and the completed hospital will open in 2009, when all acute services will be housed on a new single site. In excess of more than half a million patients throughout Portsmouth and South East Hampshire benefit annually from the acute and specialist health services provided by the Trust. The annual budget for the Trust is in excess of £360 million and 7000 staff are employed on three main hospital sites.

The Trust is proud of its military associations and hosts the largest Ministry of Defence Hospital Unit (MDHU) in the country. MDHU Portsmouth also means the Trust has wider responsibilities than those of standard NHS organisations, with Military staff accounting for 3% of the Trust's total workforce. The Trust has a responsibility to ensure these staff have the appropriate clinical experience that they will need during the times in which they are deployed throughout the world.
