Portsmouth's preparation for the 2012 Olympics
Portsmouth’s Mountbatten Sport Centre is set to undergo a £20million renovation.
The new state of the art facilities will feature an Olympic sized community swimming pool. This exciting project is being undertaken by Parkwood Leisure, one of the largest management leisure contractors in the country with an existing portfolio of over 50 leisure facilities.
The new sport centre will include a new 150 station fitness suite, 400 metre, 8-lane all weather athletics track, a new health suite with separate changing facilities, poolside accommodation and offices including a 200 capacity viewing area overlooking the main pool. The Centre is already hosting many events each year, including the Royal Shakespeare Company, Robot Wars and Sky Sports Boxing.
The Alexandra Park facility is currently contending to be a base training camp for the 2012 Olympics. The bid has been made with a view to Portsmouth being included in the Pre Games Camp Guide published for 2008 Beijing Games. London is only an hours train away giving the centre a massive advantage. Set at the gateway of the city this new development will be unique to Portsmouth, attracting world class athletes from all over the UK.
