With the Hindhead Tunnel due to be completed in 2011, Portsmouth is set to see its transport connections improve. The journey from the capital to Portsmouth will be cut by half-an-hour when the tunnel is finished.
Along with the easily-accessible ferries to the continent and conveniently placed train services, most notably Portsmouth Harbour Station right next to Gunwharf Quays and the ferry terminals, the Tunnel will boost Portsmouth’s standing as a well-linked city.
It is the best connected ferry port in Britain, with 7 continental destinations. The parking is adequate in the centre, but the council is currently focused on ambitious plans for a Park & Ride scheme and encouraging people to use the public transport, furthering Portsmouth’s efforts to ‘be green’. Thanks to the push to create 20mph speed zones in all areas of Portsmouth by next year, bar the major routes where the average speed is actually rising, our city will soon be safer than ever to drive in, for visitors and residents alike.
