Background

As part of the evidence base for the City Growth strategy, a survey was carried out of 500 local businesses. The business identified a number of strengths about Portsmouth as a place to do business, but also a number of issues.  One of these issues was the image of Portsmouth both by local people and others.  This has been confirmed by the series of well attended conferences held by City Growth.

As extensive branding exercise was conducted to fully understand and clarify the Portsmouth brand in its broadest sense, including the product, the experience, the perceptions, stakeholders interaction (business, residents, visitors, and education).  The project was facilitated by brand consultants harrison:fraser.

Following this a City Image group, Chaired by Deborah Owen-Ellis-Clarke of Gunwharf Quays and including the football club and historic dockyard worked closely with the City Council to produce this city brand & guidelines.

The objective is to improve the positive perceptions of the City by rolling out the brand vision to as wide an audience as possible, thereby educating stakeholder groups and encouraging them to become brand ambassadors, to believe in the Portsmouth brand and in turn to communicate the positive message.

In this way we will be speaking a common language to communicate the benefits of living and working or visiting Portsmouth, this common thread will spread throughout  the various sectors in the city (including both business and residents) and gradually we will ensure that Portsmouth is reflected in a true and balanced light.
